Amber, History, Symbolism and Virtues

Amber – Healing sun resin, protective warmth & memory of the Earth

1. History & Origin

Unlike most stones, Amber is not a mineral but a fossilized resin, sometimes over 50 million years old. It is the sap of ancient conifers (often of the genus Pinus succinifera), which, by solidifying and then fossilizing, was transformed into precious and vibrant organic matter.

Since Antiquity, amber has fascinated civilizations:

  • Among the Egyptians, it was considered a tear of the sun, a protector of souls in the afterlife.

  • The Greeks called it elektron (hence the word "electricity"), because when rubbed, it attracts light bodies – they attributed magnetic and purifying properties to it.

  • In medieval Europe, it was used against headaches, fevers, and toothaches in children.

  • In Baltic and Nordic traditions, it is a symbol of immortality, solar strength and protective healing.

2. Origin & Training

Amber is formed from plant resin that has undergone millions of years of pressure, oxidation, and fossilization in a particular environment (sandy or clayey soil, marshy). It sometimes contains exceptional inclusions: insects, leaves, dust, air bubbles... true frozen witnesses of Earth's past.

Main deposits:

  • Baltic Sea (Poland, Lithuania, Russia – the most famous)
  • Dominican Republic (lighter amber, sometimes bluish or green)
  • Burma (Myanmar)
  • Sicily, Mexico, Romania, Canada, China
