Carnelian – Fire of life and creative energy
1. History & Origin
Carnelian is a very ancient semi-precious stone, used since Antiquity as a stone of protection, courage and fertility.
Its name comes from the Latin "cornum", which means dogwood, a small orange-red fruit with which it shares a vibrant color.
Carnelian is found in Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, and Roman jewelry. In ancient Egypt, it symbolized the sacred blood of life and was associated with Isis, goddess of fertility, healing, and magic.
It was often placed in tombs to guide the soul of the deceased into the afterlife and give it the strength to be reborn.
Carnelian was also carved into seals, talismans and amulets, believed to ward off illness, jealousy and stagnant energies.
