EMERALD – ROYAL STONE OF THE HEART AND TRUTH
1. History & Origin
Emerald is one of the oldest and most revered gemstones in the world, nicknamed the "Queen of Gems."
Its name comes from the Greek "smaragdos," which literally means green stone. The first recorded mention of emeralds dates back over 4,000 years to Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. Cleopatra wore them as a personal talisman, and the Egyptians saw them as a symbol of fertility, rebirth, and inner power.
Egyptian emeralds were already highly prized, but it was the deposits of Colombia (notably Muzo, Chivor and Coscuez) discovered by the conquistadors in the 16th century that established the emerald as the mythical stone of the New World.
Today, the main sources of emeralds are found in:
- Colombia (the purest and brightest, intense green)
- Brazil (lighter shades, sometimes blue-green)
- Zambia (very beautiful stones with deep, saturated shades)
- Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Ethiopia, Madagascar
2. Composition & Physical Properties
Family : Beryl
Chemical formula : Be3Al2(SiO3)6
Hardness : 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale
Crystal system : Hexagonal
Density : 2.7 to 2.9
Color : Light green to deep green (due to the presence of chromium, vanadium and sometimes iron)
Transparency : Transparent to translucent
Frequent treatments : oiling (traditional and accepted) to reduce the appearance of natural cracks
Despite its hardness, emerald is often fragile due to its natural inclusions ("the emerald garden") which can create areas of internal tension.
