Lapis Lazuli – Truth, Wisdom & Sovereignty of Mind

1. History & Origin

Lapis lazuli is one of the oldest stones known to humanity. Its name comes from two roots:

“Lapis”: “stone” in Latin

“Lazuli”: from the Persian lazhward, meaning “deep blue” or “starry sky”

This intense blue stone, studded with golden pyrite, was considered more precious than gold in ancient times. It was used by the Egyptians, Sumerians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans as a royal, spiritual, and protective stone.

In Egypt, it was associated with Isis and Maat, goddesses of wisdom and truth, and was used to carve the famous scarabs, funerary masks (including that of Tutankhamun) and priestly jewelry.

Renaissance painters used crushed lapis to create the “ultramarine” pigment, reserved for the highest symbols: the Virgin Mary, the divine sky...

2. Origin & Training

Lapis lazuli is a metamorphic rock, composed mainly of lazurite, with inclusions of pyrite (golden), calcite (white) and sometimes sodalite.

Main deposits:

  • Afghanistan (Sar-e-Sang Valley – the purest and most historic, exploited for more than 6,000 years)
  • Chili (lighter lapis, sometimes veined with white)
  • Russia, Pakistan, Myanmar, United States

3. Composition & Physical Properties

Family : Composite rock based on sulfur silicates

Main components : Lazurite, pyrite, calcite

Chemical formula (simplified): (Na,Ca)8(AlSiO4)6(S,SO4,Cl)2

Crystal system : Cubic

Hardness : 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale

Density : 2.4 to 2.9

Luster : Matte to slightly glassy

Color : Deep royal blue, with golden (pyrite) and sometimes white (calcite) inclusions

4. Virtues & Benefits in Lithotherapy

7. Purification & Recharging

  • No water or salt: lapis is porous and sensitive to corrosive agents
  • Sound (Tibetan bowl) or gentle vibration

Recharging :

  • Soft moonlight (full or waxing moon)
  • No direct sunlight: it can alter the blue color
  • On a rock crystal geode, selenite or amethyst druse
  • By intention: visualize an electric blue or indigo light, penetrating the stone from above and illuminating it from within

8. Symbolism

Lapis Lazuli is the royal symbol of inner truth, transmitted wisdom, and spiritual sovereignty.

It represents:

  • The clear vision of the soul
  • Communication aligned with the heart
  • The link between celestial thought and earthly expression
  • The power to enlighten, to guide, to transmit with accuracy

It is a stone of vibrational nobility, which invites us to live with lucidity, to speak without hurting, to see without judging, and to guide without dominating.
