Pink Sapphire: History, Symbolism and Virtues
Share
1. History & Origins
Pink sapphire belongs to the large corundum family, just like blue sapphire and ruby. Its existence was long ignored or confused with that of ruby, due to its sometimes very intense pink color. It was only in the 20th century that pink sapphire was fully recognized as a variety in its own right, prized for its delicacy and subtle energy.
Traditionally less well-known than its blue cousin, pink sapphire has gained popularity in modern fine jewelry, particularly for its romantic and soothing symbolism. It is now associated with true love, loyalty of the heart, and emotional tenderness.
The main historical and current deposits are located in:
- Madagascar (one of the most renowned for the quality of pink sapphires)
- Sri Lanka (Ceylon), ancient source of soft pink corundums
- Burma (Myanmar), known for its deep hues
- Tanzania, Thailand, Vietnam and sometimes Australia
2. Composition & Physical Properties
Mineral family : Corundum
Chemical formula : Al2O3 (Aluminum oxide)
Color : Pale pink to intense pink, sometimes with purple highlights
Hardness : 9 on the Mohs scale (extremely strong)
Crystal system : Rhombohedral
Density : About 4
Transparency : Transparent to translucent
Its color comes mainly from the presence of chromium (Cr), in lower quantities than in ruby. Chromium gives it its pinkish tone, which is softer and brighter.

Pink Sapphire embodies purity of heart combined with inner strength. Less well-known than its blue cousin, it vibrates with a subtle, gentle yet powerful energy, conveying sincere love, peaceful tenderness, and emotional loyalty.
It is the symbol of unconditional love, but also of reconciliation with oneself: it invites us to open our hearts without fear, to welcome love without dependence, and to love with trust, without compromising our truth.
A stone of lucid romantics, sensitive but strong souls, pink sapphire supports the healing of emotional wounds, emotional rebirth and conscious forgiveness.
It is a stone of inner grace, revealing the beauty of the soul without excessive brilliance, but with depth. It unites the gentleness of the sacred feminine with the integrity of the heart, in a discreet, yet magnetic radiance.
